Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections, has stepped in to assist traders affected by the devastating fire that swept through the Adum Bluelight Market in Kumasi’s Central Business District.
The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 21, caused severe losses, leaving traders struggling to recover.
Financial and Material Support for Reconstruction
During a visit to the site on Wednesday, April 2, Dr. Prempeh (Napo) expressed sympathy for the victims and assured them of his full support.
To aid in the rebuilding process, he donated:
GH₵50,000 in cash
500 bags of cement
An additional GH₵100,000 from the Manhyia South MP’s Common Fund
Encouraging unity among traders, he emphasized the need for collective effort to rebuild the market efficiently.
"I know Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the regional minister, Kennedy Agyapong, and others have visited you. Even President Mahama and some NPP executives have been here. So, if I didn’t come, it wouldn’t be fair to you," he stated.
Dr. Prempeh also reflected on the personal impact of the tragedy, expressing his solidarity with the affected traders.
"The woes of your brother are your woes as well. I have been affected personally by this fire. Only those who experience such loss can truly understand the pain. I pray that God comforts you and helps you rebuild. In politics, we must remember that we use people to build a nation, not just money."
Additional Contributions
In a further show of support, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, also donated 100 bags of cement to aid in reconstruction efforts.
Both leaders have pledged to work closely with the traders and other stakeholders to restore the market to its former vibrancy.
