Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has called on his players to stay focused and avoid complacency as they prepare to face Madagascar in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday.
Ghana currently sits at the top of Group I after a convincing victory over Chad, and a win against Madagascar could extend their lead to five points. However, Addo has warned that the team must not become overconfident.
> “It’s very, very important that we stay focused until we’ve made the job, and now it’s the whole focus about Madagascar,” Addo said, as quoted by the Ghana FA.
“We really, really want to win this match, we want to have a clean sheet, and this is what we’re looking for.”
Despite Ghana's 11 goals in the last three matches, Addo stressed that past performances do not guarantee future victories.
> “We could have won 10 games, and still we want to win the 11th. Statistics are good, but they don’t indicate that you will win or lose the next match.”
Defensive Concerns and Mindset
While the Black Stars have been strong in attack, defensive lapses remain an area of concern. Addo emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset when mistakes occur.
> “Football is a sport of mistakes, and who does more will lose. It’s very, very important that we have a positive mindset if we make a mistake,” he added.
Building on Chad Victory
Reflecting on Ghana’s win over Chad, Addo praised the team for capitalizing on early chances, which made the game easier in the second half.
> "Everybody knew what this game was about, and I’m very, very happy that we used our chances, especially in the first half.”
With qualification still at stake, Addo urged his players to stay grounded and take things step by step.
> “Nobody should take it easy, nobody should start thinking already about the World Cup because we need to take it step by step.”
Ghana fans will be hoping the Black Stars can maintain their momentum and edge closer to securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
