Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has raised alarms over the massive water losses affecting supply, revealing that only 48% of treated water reaches consumers, while the remaining 52% is lost due to leaks, illegal connections, and inefficiencies in the distribution network.
Speaking at a forum in Accra, acting CEO Adam Mutawakilu described the issue as a major challenge that threatens both service delivery and financial stability.
"As of December 2024, non-revenue water was at 52%. This means that out of all the water we produce and dispatch, only 48% reaches customers," he explained.
Causes of Water Losses
The non-revenue water (NRW)—treated water that fails to generate income due to system losses—has become a pressing issue for GWL. Key factors include:
Leaking pipelines, which waste significant amounts of treated water.
Illegal connections, reducing revenue and disrupting supply.
Aging infrastructure, making repairs and efficient distribution difficult.
Urgent Call for Infrastructure Improvements
Mutawakilu emphasized that these water losses are straining resources and causing supply shortages in many communities. To address the issue, GWL is calling for urgent investments in infrastructure improvements, enhanced monitoring, and stricter enforcement to reduce wastage and ensure reliable water delivery.
