Ghana’s mobile money industry has recorded a strong start to 2025, with transactions totaling GH₵649.2 billion within the first two months of the year.
This represents a 64.68% increase compared to the GH₵394.2 billion recorded in the same period in 2024, according to Bank of Ghana data.
In January 2025, mobile money transactions reached GH₵333 billion, before slightly declining to GH₵316.2 billion in February 2025.
Impact of E-Levy Removal and Market Growth
The surge in transactions occurred despite the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), which was scrapped by the new government last week. Analysts predict that mobile money transactions could grow even further with the removal of the levy, boosting Ghana’s financial technology sector.
Mobile money usage is also on the rise, with the number of registered accounts reaching 74.1 million, up from 66.9 million in early 2024. However, out of 896,000 registered agents, only 411,000 were actively processing transactions.
2024: A Record Year for Mobile Money
In 2024, Ghana recorded an all-time high of GH₵3.0192 trillion in mobile money transactions, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 57.90%.
With the E-Levy now abolished and adoption rates climbing, the mobile money sector is poised for even greater expansion, reinforcing its role in Ghana’s digital economy.
