Sunyani, Bono Region – Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is on course to eliminate the Double-Track system in Senior High Schools (SHSs) by 2027.
Speaking at a meeting with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in Sunyani, the Minister revealed that several initiatives—including a revised curriculum and reforms to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)—are being rolled out to support this transition.
“We expect that by the year 2027, the double-track system will be a thing of the past,” he affirmed.
Mr. Iddrisu emphasized the need for proper governance structures at institutions like GETFund to ensure transparency and efficient use of resources in upgrading school facilities nationwide.
The Double-Track system, introduced to expand access to free SHS education, has received mixed reactions. While it helped accommodate increasing student numbers, critics argue it compromises teaching quality and puts pressure on infrastructure.
As 2027 approaches, stakeholders—especially educators, parents, and students—are hopeful the phase-out will lead to improved learning environments, better resource allocation, and enhanced educational outcomes.
