Ghanaian politician Hopeson Adorye has publicly endorsed polygamy, arguing that men should have the freedom to marry multiple wives without legal restrictions.
Speaking during a live TikTok session hosted by his wife, gospel musician Empress Gifty, Adorye stated that ordinance marriages, which legally bind men to one wife, impose unnecessary limitations. Instead, he encouraged men to opt for customary marriages, which allow multiple wives.
"Single men shouldn't engage in ordinance marriages that prevent them from having more than one wife," he asserted.
He also claimed that many women miss financial stability by refusing to be second wives.
"Many women make the mistake of rejecting wealthy men who can care for them just because they don’t want to be second wives, only to settle for poor men," he remarked.
When asked by Empress Gifty if he personally intended to marry another wife, Adorye admitted that while he supports polygamy, his current ordinance marriage prevents him from taking another wife.
"The Bible supports second marriages, and I support it. However, because my marriage with you is under ordinance, I can’t marry a second wife," he explained.
His comments have sparked widespread discussions on marriage choices and legal limitations, with many debating whether men should reconsider ordinance marriages if they desire multiple wives.
