Laboratory tests have confirmed that the Tordze River, a tributary of the Volta River, remains safe for use despite initial fears of contamination from a chemical spill in Tove, Togo.

Concerns arose after a truck carrying agrochemicals crashed on February 19, 2025, prompting the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) to issue a warning about possible pollution. However, investigations show that the water meets safety standards, with no signs of dead aquatic life or unusual odors.

Precautionary Measures & Ongoing Tests

Residents are advised to treat the water before drinking or using it for cooking.

Health facilities in the area have not reported any waterborne diseases linked to the incident.

Samples have been sent to the Ghana Standards Authority and the Ghana Water Company Limited for further pesticide residue analysis.

Togolese authorities are assisting in pinpointing the exact location and nature of the spill.

Authorities remain cautious and will provide further updates as additional laboratory investigations continue.
