The mother of three siblings who were wrongfully arrested and publicly paraded as suspects in the murder of a mobile money vendor in Kumasi is demanding a public apology from the Ghana Police Service.
Madam Mary Kyei insists that her sons were unjustly detained, which has severely damaged their reputation and cost them their jobs.
How the Arrest Happened
Recounting the incident, she explained that the police had come to arrest a tenant in her home who was being investigated for the murder. However, two of her sons were mistakenly arrested in the process.
“We heard noise from the room I had rented to a young man, so I went out to inquire. I saw the police arresting the tenant who lived with the girl who was murdered. My son followed me, but the police ordered him to go back and sleep.”
She added that when her son stepped out again, he was arrested on the spot. When his older brother came to ask why, he was also taken into custody.
The third sibling, who had gone to the police station to seek clarification about his brothers' arrest, was also detained.
Impact on the Family
It took Madam Kyei's direct appeal to the Deputy Regional Police Commander before her sons were released. However, by then, their images and videos had gone viral, falsely branding them as murder suspects.
“I had to walk to the office of the Deputy Regional Commander to explain my story; he ordered their release immediately.”
The consequences have been devastating for the family. Their community now views them with suspicion, and two of her sons have lost their jobs as a result.
“One is a driver, his car owner called him to return the car, claiming he could be a target for anybody. So he is now jobless.”
“My other son, who worked with an alcohol distribution company, was sacked after the release. They claim my children are murderers,” she added.
Call for Public Apology
Madam Kyei is now calling on the Ghana Police Service to issue a public apology to clear her sons’ names and restore their dignity.
The incident has sparked concerns about wrongful arrests, public humiliation of suspects, and the long-term damage to innocent individuals due to premature conclusions by law enforcement agencies.
