The New People' s Party (NPP) minority caucus has formally announced its decision to abstain from voting on the nomination of Samuel Nartey George, despite maintaining its fundamental opposition to his appointment.
The NPP caucus, consisting of 88 members, had previously expressed strong reservations about George' s nomination. Initially, they sought a secret ballot to oppose his appointment actively. However, in a dramatic shift, they ultimately opted for abstention, leaving the decision entirely in the hands of the majority party.

According to the caucus, their decision to step back from active resistance stemmed from appeals by respected members of Parliament, urging them to reconsider their position. While they continue to stand by their initial concerns, the NPP members stated that their decision to abstain was a symbolic gesture of goodwill and respect for the views of others within the legislative body.

In a strongly worded statement, the minority caucus declared that they had relinquished any responsibility for the outcome of the vote. " We have washed our hands of him; it is the majority' s cross to carry, " the statement read. This symbolic phrasing suggests a deliberate move to distance themselves from any potential consequences arising from George' s confirmation.
Political analysts interpret this move as a strategic shift rather than a retreat. By abstaining, the NPP avoids direct confrontation while still signaling their disapproval. At the same time, they place the full burden of responsibility on the majority party, effectively making it clear that any successes or failures of the nominee will not be attributed to them.

With the minority caucus stepping aside, all eyes are now on the majority party, which holds the decisive votes. Their endorsement— or rejection— of Samuel George will ultimately determine the outcome. Meanwhile, the NPP' s decision to abstain has sparked debate over whether this approach strengthens or weakens their position in future parliamentary negotiations.
As the dust settles, one thing is clear: the political maneuvering surrounding this nomination has set the stage for deeper divisions and strategic calculations in the legislative process.
