An Akuapem-Larteh based Non-Profit Organisation, ‘As I Grow’, has donated school items to Tadankro – MA Basic school, in the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly.

The items are exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners and other learning aids to the school children and the school.

Speaking with The Media, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of As I Grow, Mr Isaac Debrah Bekoe said he was touched by the plight of the children and, therefore, decided to help them.

According to him, poor infrastructure, lack of technology, textbooks and other learning materials often result in lower grades and test scores.

He continued that when students do not feel supported by their learning environment, they are more likely to disengage and drop out, leading to cycles of poverty and limited future opportunities.

Mr. Bekoe noted that underfunded schools often serve marginalised communities and thus exacerbating existing inequalities, which could limit access to quality education for disadvantaged groups.

To him, poor working conditions could lead to low morale and high turnover rates among teachers, which could affect the quality of education and ability of school children to compete in sports, arts and other extra-curricular activities, which are vital for holistic development.
It was seen that more than 50% of the children were not having school uniforms and footwear.
Mr. Samuel Amoah, the project coordinator for As I Grow NGO pointed out that, As I Grow NGO has an agenda of doing all it can to support children in the deprived schools and communities to create a conducive environment for them to encourage them to have interest in education and also pursue their career dreams.

The children expressing their joy
This, among others, he disclosed, motivated him to support the children and their schools to reduce feelings of shame, low self-esteem and social stigma because of the wearing of tattered clothes to school.

The CEO of the Akuapem-Larteh Non-Governmental Organisation broke down in tears when he spotted that the school does not even have drums and jerseys and even football for extra curricula activities apart from the numerous problems in the school.
The school, which is more than 7 miles away from Adawso market center is isolated and has not better road leading to the village.
Speaking to the community leaders, they bemoaned how lack of electricity and road has affected their economic activities. They said they are not able to transport their farm products which has increased poverty in the area.
They also lamented on how deadly the bridge between the school on the Yensi river which has become a death trap and has prevented children from Skubi, Moria and Nsu Akyi from coming to school. They therefore took the opportunity to plead with government authorities to support is solving this plight.
Speaking to the women in the community at Tadankro, they pleaded the government to support the school with school feeding program to support their wards since absence of food in the community do not allow children to have interest in going to school.

The CEO after spotting more than 50% of the children without uniforms promised their support for them in order to help them get uniforms and feel comfortable more comfortable coming to school in that state, than to stay at home.

A teacher who spoke with this media, on a condition of anonymity, expressed his worry on how some adolescents have started engaging in premarital sex in exchange sanitary pads and there called for support.

According to the teacher, some of the children are not perturbed about their current conditions and that they are always focused when it comes to classroom work.
The Odikro of Tadankro, on his part, thanked management of the NGO for the kind gesture and further appealed for more support for Tadankro MA Basic school.

According to the Odikro (Opanin Kwadwo Asare), insufficient facilities such as textbooks, exercise books, writing materials, uniforms and electricity have contributed to students’ inability to learn effectively and perform well academically.

He described the state of the bridge on the Yensi River as a death trap, with weak pillars, visible cracks in the pillars, which needs immediate renovation or new structure.

The school Headteacher(Mr Charles Angaga) , children, and the entire community expressed their profound gratitude to the chief executive officer and the entire As I Grow NGO.
