Accra, 5th April 2025. As Ghana joins the global community to observe World Physical Activity Day on April 6th, the Institute of Leadership and Development (INSLA) wholeheartedly supports this year's national theme: "Active Today, Healthy Tomorrow: Empowering Ghanaians Through Physical Activity."

This timely theme underscores the vital connection between participating in regular physical activity today and securing a healthier future for all Ghanaians.

INSLA commends the Government of Ghana for its commitment, as demonstrated in the National Health Policy, to promoting healthy lifestyles and acknowledging the crucial role of physical activity in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and enhancing overall well-being.

The launch of the 2025 World Physical Activity Day by the Ministry of Health, alongside the announcement of the nationwide "The Ghana Walk" initiative in partnership with The New You Fitness, as well as the National Recreation Day Mentioned by President John Dramani Mahama during his first State of the Nation Address are commendable steps in raising awareness and mobilizing the population towards healthier habits.

We appreciate the efforts of the Ministry of Health in partnership with The New You Fitness to organize a nationwide health walk themed “The Ghana Walk” set to happen on the 10th of May 2025 to create awareness and encourage physical activities amongst the Ghanaian population.

Physical activity is an indispensable tool in combating the rising prevalence of NCDs such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers. It also plays a significant role in preventing overweight and obesity, improving mental health, and enhancing the quality of life for people of all ages.

As the National Health Policy advocates for the adoption of healthy lifestyles and the development of recreational facilities, these policies must be translated into widespread and accessible programs across the nation.

Benjamin Anabila, Director of INSLA, stated, "The theme for this year's World Physical Activity Day is a powerful reminder that our actions today impact our health tomorrow.

He also emphasized on the need for continuous, intensified commitment from all stakeholders, government agencies, policymakers, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, civil society organizations, the private sector, and individuals to create an environment that actively promotes and supports physical activity as a fundamental aspect of daily life.

These commitment include:
• Sustained investment in the development and maintenance of safe and accessible infrastructure for walking, cycling, and other forms of physical activity in both urban and rural settings.
• The integration of physical activity promotion into educational curricula, workplace wellness programs, and community-based initiatives.
• More public awareness campaigns that highlight the numerous benefits of regular exercise and encourage participation across all demographics.
• Strengthening collaborations across sectors to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to tackling physical inactivity.

INSLA applauds the government's ongoing efforts and encourage a steadfast commitment to prioritize and implement effective strategies that make physical activity an accessible and enjoyable part of every Ghanaian's life.

We at INSLA believe that prioritizing and promoting physical activity as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle in Ghana can make significant strides in reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), improving the overall health and well-being of its population, and contributing meaningfully to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3).
