The release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results could face delays, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has warned, due to an outstanding government debt of GH₵166 million. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, expressed concerns over unpaid fees to exam invigilators, supervisors, and script checkers, totaling over GH₵4 million.

In a recent interview with JoyNews, Mr. Kapi detailed that the government has paid only about one-third of WAEC’s 2024 budget of GH₵186 million, leaving GH₵40.4 million in arrears from previous years. "The fees for 2024 stood at 186.437 million Ghana cedis, but before the exam, the government paid only 60.976 million. This accounts for just a third of the budgeted amount, and a substantial portion remains unpaid from 2023," Kapi explained.

Kapi further indicated that delays in payment may result in WAEC holding back the release of the WASSCE results until the funds are cleared. "If they choose to keep the scripts due to uncertain payment, the results could be delayed," he warned.

In response, the Ministry of Education has assured the public of ongoing efforts to ensure the timely release of results. Ministry spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng confirmed that GH₵15 million was recently disbursed to WAEC, and additional payments are being processed to avoid any postponements.

Kwarteng reassured students and parents, stating, “We are confident that results will be released on schedule. The government and WAEC have a structured working relationship, and financial obligations are being addressed to ensure smooth operations.”

Students, parents, and educators are hopeful for a quick resolution as the wait continues for the 2024 WASSCE results.
