The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the provisional results for candidates who took the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both School and Private Candidates. In a statement released on October 19, WAEC stated that the results of school candidates will be sent to their respective schools via the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education.

However, WAEC reported instances of examination malpractice during the process. Following investigations, the Final Awards and Examiners' Appointment Committee, during its 35th meeting on October 16, 2024, approved the cancellation of subject results for 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates. These candidates were found guilty of bringing unauthorized materials into the exam hall or colluding with others.

In addition, the entire results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate were cancelled.

WAEC also disclosed that the results of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates have been withheld pending further investigations into irregularities. Similarly, subject results from 149 schools have been withheld due to reports of malpractice. These results may either be released or cancelled based on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.

Overall, 569,236 candidates, comprising 282,703 males and 286,533 females from 19,505 schools, registered for the school examination. This included 59 visually impaired candidates, 263 with hearing impairments, and 161 with other special needs. The exams were conducted at 2,123 centres nationwide, with 3,845 candidates marked as absent.

For the BECE for Private Candidates, a total of 1,390 individuals, consisting of 750 males and 640 females, registered to take the exams at 15 centres located primarily in regional capitals. Among these, 57 private candidates were reported absent.
