The University of Ghana has unveiled a self-placement system aimed at assisting qualified applicants who did not gain admission into their preferred programs. This innovative approach allows applicants to select from available programs through the university’s admissions portal.

The announcement was made by Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, Director of the Academic Affairs Directorate, during an interview on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers on January 9, 2024.

Purpose of the Self-Placement System

Mrs. Nyako-Danquah explained that the self-placement system is designed to help applicants who fail to meet the qualification requirements for their initial program choices. She encouraged such applicants to revisit the admissions portal and select programs they are eligible for, emphasizing the importance of choosing courses that match their academic strengths and mental preparedness.

> “We have implemented a system to assist students who may not be admitted to self-place in suitable programs. If you do not receive any notification from us, revisit the portal where you will find options for programs you qualify for and self-place in it,” she stated.

She further highlighted the demanding nature of university education and the need for applicants to meet program requirements to ensure success.

Admissions Helpdesk for Support

To provide additional support, the University of Ghana has established an admissions helpdesk at the UG Information Center, located near the main entrance. This helpdesk is available to assist applicants with inquiries and guide them through the self-placement process.

> “A helpdesk will be available at the information center close to the main entrance for students who need assistance. The admissions process is expected to conclude by the end of January to pave the way for the matriculation of newly admitted students,” Mrs. Nyako-Danquah added.

Admission Requirements for University of Ghana

To gain admission to the University of Ghana, applicants must meet the following requirements:

WASSCE Credit Passes (A1-C6): In six subjects, including three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies) and three electives relevant to the chosen program.

Aggregate Score: An aggregate of 24 or better is required, with stricter cut-offs for competitive programs.

The new self-placement system is expected to streamline the admissions process and provide a second chance for deserving applicants to join Ghana’s premier university.
