In the aftermath of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) defeat in the 2024 General Elections, Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has pointed fingers at President Akufo-Addo, claiming that his leadership played a role in the party's loss, according to Star FM on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Following the announcement of John Dramani Mahama as President-elect with 56.55% of the legitimate votes, Appiah-Kubi feels the NPP's slide is due in part to the President's handling of the country's economy.
In an interview with Serwaa Amihere on GHOne TV, the lawmaker stressed that the NPP's defeat was due to the government's failure to meet public expectations, particularly in terms of economic management.
"We lost because of the government and how they handled the economy," Appiah-Kubi said, adding that he didn't want to personalize the loss.
He admitted his role in criticizing the President's leadership, stating, "I was part of the group that said this person is not meeting our expectations, so let's change him."
Despite this, he avoided fully criticizing Akufo-Addo for the outcome, suggesting that it was a collective failure rather than one man's fault.
Furthermore, Appiah-Kubi argued that the government's failure to meet the people's demands and problems had a substantial impact on the NPP's bad performance.
"Our government did not respond to the expectations of the people," he concluded, indicating a misalignment between the ruling party's aims and the demands of the voters.
