A major fire has overtaken a scrap yard near the China Mall in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, burning nearly 17 containers and other property worth millions of Ghana cedis.

A combined crew of Tema and Ashaiman firefighters extinguished the inferno, which caused severe damage but no casualties.

Speaking on the event, DOIII Ebenezer Yenzu of the Ghana National Fire Service claimed that the source of the fire is unknown, and investigations are underway to ascertain its origin.

He also asked scrap yard traders and businesses to exercise caution, especially during changing weather conditions, to avoid similar disasters.

The fire service's quick response helped prevent greater damage, however the losses were significant.
