Former Lower-West Akim Member of Parliament and Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) CEO Madam Gifty Klenam entered the election as an independent candidate in an attempt to win the seat.

She was re-elected in 2012 after running for the Lower-West Akim seat on the NPP ticket for the first time in 2008, however she lost to Mr.Eyiah Kyei-Bafuour, who represented the NPP in parliament in 2016.

She became the first female MP for the area and the only MP to have been elected for two consecutive terms in the constituency's history.
