Sister Derby, a musician and LGBT+ rights activist from Ghana, recently criticized Ghanaian presidents for their position on the contentious anti-LGBT+ bill in a tweet, sparking a new round of social media debates.

According to Sister Derby's tweet, a number of Ghanaian presidents are hesitant to put the bill into law since they are aware of its possible drawbacks.

"Ghana's president is unwilling to sign it. "They are more knowledgeable," she wrote.

In a previous appearance on MX24 TV, she maintained that there is no solid proof to back up allegations of a "gay agenda" in schools and underlined that LGBT+ people have long been a part of Ghanaian culture, making a substantial contribution to creativity and entertainment.

She claims that a large portion of the animosity is rooted in a fear of the abilities and distinctive characteristics of LGBT+ people.

The post follows continuing discussions around the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, which Ghanaian lawmakers passed in February 2024 but President Akufo-Addo has not yet signed into law.

Human rights advocates and the general public have taken issue with the bill, which imposes harsh fines for same-sex relationships, encourages LGBTQ activities, and outlaws LGBT+ groups and trans healthcare.

Sister Derby has continuously expressed her opposition to the measure and is well-known for her vocal advocacy of LGBT+ rights.
