According to reports, Mike Oquaye Jnr., the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome Kwabenya, is allegedly handing televisions, refrigerators, cash, and other gifts to voters in Abokobi ahead of the next election re-run at one voting station.

The re-run, forced by issues from the last election, has heightened political tensions in the area, with both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) fighting for power. According to sources, Oquaye Jnr.'s activities are intended to convince undecided voters and consolidate support in a potentially critical race.

According to eyewitnesses, big crowds have gathered in key areas throughout Abokobi, where things are supposedly delivered alongside campaign slogans asking locals to vote for the NPP. "They are giving out cash and promising more benefits if Mike Oquaye wins," a local claimed, asking anonymity.

The NDC has fiercely condemned the purported measures, labeling them a desperate attempt to sway the election. Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC candidate who is presently leading the race, called the reported activities "unethical and a direct attack on the democratic process." Akurugu requested the Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies to conduct an investigation and take immediate steps to ensure the integrity of the rerun.

Political observers worry that if proven genuine, such charges might undermine the election's credibility and deepen political conflicts in Dome Kwabenya. The EC has yet to respond to the reports, but observers are urging for increased surveillance throughout the re-run to ensure a free and fair process.

The election re-run is seen as a litmus test for both parties as they prepare for the 2024 general elections.
