Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has denied that Freemasonry is an esoteric society. He believes it is strongly founded in Christian beliefs and principles.

Speaking on Sunday, Afenyo-Markin defended Freemasonry in the face of public scrutiny for his questioning of George Opare Addo's membership during a vetting session.

The topic immediately spread on social media, with some calling it a clandestine cult. However, Afenyo-Markin refuted such claims, noting that Christianity is central to Masonic beliefs.

"So, I'm telling you that the Rose Choir, Perfection Stage, the greatest degree of Masonry, is all about the New Testament and Christ's teachings. It is talking about Christ's sacrifices. And it is therefore abhorrent for anyone to claim that Freemasonry is an esoteric society," he stated on February 2.

On January 27, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra restated its position against Freemasonry, emphasizing that Catholics cannot be members of Masonic organizations without breaching Church doctrine.

The letter unequivocally stated, "You cannot be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time," answering long-standing concerns about whether the Church had changed its view.

According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, one must confess Christianity before reaching certain levels of Freemasonry, bolstering the notion that it is not incompatible with Christian views.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin discussed many branches of Freemasonry, including Mark Masonry, which emphasizes humility and respect for all people.

"This is the Mark Masonry; it mentions the rejected stone." It addresses circumstances in which people believe they are flawless and look down on others. So the whole point of Mark Masonry is to make you realize that individuals who are at the bottom of the fortune's wheel deserve your attention," he explained.

He claimed that Freemasonry is consistent with Christian beliefs and should not be portrayed as occultism.
