Ahead of Ghana's impending elections, former President John Dramani Mahama has warned the people about a fake money incentive program that has gone widespread on social media. The hoax, which is making the rounds on WhatsApp and other platforms, makes the untrue claim that Ghanaians are receiving financial awards from Mahama, the flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In order to be eligible for the purported prize, the message asks recipients to click on a link, finish a quick job, and then send the message to others. Numerous gullible people have complied with these directives, spreading the word to friends and relatives in the hopes of earning the promised reward.
Mahama, however, vehemently denied any involvement in the plan on his verified Facebook page. He explained that the message was not from his office and called it a phony attempt to use his name for financial gain. The former president called on Ghanaians to ignore the message and show it the disdain it merited. Additionally, he cautioned the populace against falling for such schemes, particularly during election season when opportunists can exploit people's confidence.
His comment immediately went viral on social media, with many internet users thanking him for the clarification and asking others to spread the word so that more people won't be hurt. Confusion was reduced by Mahama's prompt action, because several residents had doubted the message's authenticity.
Ghanaians are reminded by the occurrence to be on the lookout for scams that take advantage of public persons or current affairs. Ahead of the elections, Mahama's message has prompted increased awareness and attentiveness.
