A high-risk inmate's audacious escape from Kumasi Central Prison has caused tension in the Ashanti Region, as myjoyonline reported earlier today.

Authorities are conducting a manhunt for the fugitive after the breakout, which took place late on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, left locals terrified.

The prisoner was Kwame Agyeman, 32, who was serving a 25-year term for attempted murder and armed robbery.

Agyeman was able to compromise security during regular early-morning operations, according to prison officials. Initial inquiries indicate that he might have gotten outside help planning his escape.

The incident was reported in a press briefing by Assistant Director of Prisons (ADP) Joseph Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Commander of Prisons.

"We are collaborating closely with law enforcement and other security organizations in order to capture the fugitive. "We encourage everyone to be on guard and report any suspicious people or activities," he stated.

According to prison staff eyewitness reports, Agyeman was last spotted close to the facility's perimeter gate before vanishing into the neighborhood.

Since then, security personnel have blocked off areas of Kumasi and are searching Asafo, Bantama, and Tafo, among other neighboring settlements.

Concerns regarding their safety have been raised by locals who live close to the facility. This is frightening. Knowing that someone so dangerous is out there makes us uneasy. "The government must move swiftly," Asafo trader Akosua Mensah stated.

The effectiveness of the security procedures at the Kumasi Central Prison has also come under scrutiny in light of the breakout. To stop such occurrences, analysts and human rights activists are demanding that the jail system be redesigned.

"This serves as a warning. According to security expert Kwesi Owusu, "to ensure the safety of both inmates and the public, our prisons need better infrastructure, advanced surveillance, and more personnel."

The Ghana Prisons Service has responded by promising to increase security at all prisons across the country. To ascertain whether carelessness or collaboration contributed to the escape, a special investigating team has also been established.

Since the fugitive is armed and dangerous, law enforcement officials have advised the public to report any sightings right away rather than approach them.
