A 32-year-old man named Kojo Mensah is accused of killing his wife, Ama Serwaa, in Ashaiman on Sunday night after a fight over GH₵30 that he requested be used to buy bhang, according to a report published by 3News today Wednesday.
The tragic incident has rocked the Ashaiman neighborhood and spurred conversations about substance misuse and domestic violence.
Neighbors said that a teacher named Mensah went up to Serwaa and asked for GH₵30 to purchase bhang. The pair apparently got into a heated dispute after she refused to give the money.
A woman's mother reveals alarming information about a couple who were discovered dead in their Abuakwa Maakro house.
As the argument swiftly got out of hand, Mensah is reported to have pulled out a machete in a fit of wrath and fatally wounded Serwaa. She suffered severe injuries when he repeatedly hit her in the neck.
After hearing the chaos and Serwaa's calls for assistance, the neighbors hurried to her aid.
They tried to take her to the Ashaiman Polyclinic, but when they got there, they were pronounced dead.
Mensah left the area after the assault. Later, his body was found dangling from a tree outside his house early on Monday morning. Shortly after the incident, authorities suspect he committed suicide.
The tragedy was confirmed by the local assemblyman, who also mentioned that he had previously mediated between the couple on multiple occasions since they were allegedly having marital problems.
The assemblyman said, "This is a tragic loss." Nothing could have prepared us for this, even though we've had to step in during their arguments before. He claimed that during previous disagreements, Mensah had repeatedly threatened to hurt his wife, which alarmed those close to the family.
Since then, the Ashaiman Police Station has recorded the complaint, and investigators are working on it. Mensah and Serwaa's bodies have been sent to the mortuary at Tema General Hospital, where they are awaiting postmortem tests.
