The Electoral Commission has named Faustina Akurugu, the NDC candidate, the winner of Dome Kwabenya's parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat for the first time.
The NDC candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, was proclaimed the winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, following a closely contested campaign.
She won 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) opponent, Mike Oquaye Jr., who received 50,669.
During an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on December 31, Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa confirmed the declaration of results for the Dome Kwabenya Constituency.
"We are glad to announce that the processes and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have concluded. It has come full circle, and we are absolutely certain that the outcome reflects the people's will as stated at the polls. Our goal is not to make somebody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcomes and processes uphold the people's will," she told the audience at the EC's new headquarters.
This victory represents a remarkable shift in a constituency long dominated by the NPP. Sarah Adwoa Safo held the seat since 2012.
Akurugu's victory echoes a larger trend in the 2024 elections, in which the NDC has gained ground in constituencies traditionally considered NPP strongholds, including as Adansi Asokwa and Sekondi.
