Kojo Opei, the former Constituency deputy organizer of the NPP in the Awutu Senya West Constituency, has been detained for allegedly extorting money from persons in order to recruit them into security services.
According to reports, the 50-year-old NPP executive member extorted around 10 billion Ghana Cedis from more than 60 people under the guise of recruiting them for police, military, fire, and prison services.
Some of the victims who stormed the Bawjiase police station after the suspect was captured claimed they were coming to get their money.
Speaking to the media, one of the victims, who claimed to have paid the suspect an initial GHC 7,000 for his two children who wanted to work in security, disclosed that the suspect informed him that he works at the Flagstaff house and knows some dignitaries who can assist.
"There are over 60 people from whom he has extorted money, and the least amount is GHC 7,000. Some paid GHC 50,000 and more."
"I wanted to work in the jail system, therefore the suspect was recommended to me and my brother. We were really confident that we would obtain it because the guy who recommended him to us was already in the service."
"We paid GHC 450, 000 but later we found out that the thing wasn't real because he was still demanding additional money, one victim said."
"After getting the money he travelled outside Ghana so reaching him was very difficult so when we heard that he has been arrested after he returned from abroad, we decided to come here for our money" .
