The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released a press release informing students, staff, parents, and the general public about the reopening dates for schools in the 2024/25 academic year.

According to the statement dated January 2, 2025, Senior High School (SHS) pupils are expected to return to school on January 3, 2025, while elementary and junior high schools will reopen on January 8, 2025.

This announcement came after the GES reverted to the pre-COVID-19 academic calendar, which was reset for September through July.

The revised calendar enables better planning and ensures adequate contact hours with students.

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the GES implemented a transitional schedule from 2021 to 2022, with the school year beginning in January and ending in December.

The GES has also stated that it is working with the Ministry to address issues made by the leadership of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools.

The service has urged that all stakeholders take note of the reopening dates and make appropriate plans.

In recent years, the GES has worked to enhance the education sector, including implementing the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

The initiative, implemented in 2017, intends to give free education to all SHS students in public schools.
