The New Patriotic Party has been ordered by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande to turn over Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako for detention and prosecution.
After the NPP's crushing defeat in the national elections on December 7, Mustapha Gbande, who has been in the Ashanti Region, maintains that Chairman Wontumi has committed environmental crimes by destroying rivers and pillaging forest reserves during his purportedly unlawful mining adventures.
Mustapha stated his dissatisfaction at having set up an ambush for Wontumi but failing to find him after the NPP's loss to the NDC.
"I pledged that we would arrest Wontumi within a week of assuming office. I have been looking for him, but I haven't been able to find out where he is hiding. "Anyone who knows where he is should help me," he said on "Cup of Tea" on Ultimate FM.
In order to make up for the harm he has caused and the threat that his involvement in Galamsey has brought to countless Ghanaians by contaminating fresh water bodies with poisons like cyanide and mercury, Mustapha Gbande informed host Julius Caesar Anadem Wontumi that he will be held accountable.
"Wontumi will make up for environmental pollution, water pollution, and land degradation in Ashanti, the western region, and some areas of the central region."
"To make amends to Ghanaians, we would sell his machines. We would pay Ghanaians by selling his homes.
According to the NDC's deputy general secretary, the party would visit Chairman Wontumi's mining locations to see if he has reclaimed mining shafts in accordance with Ghana's mining laws.
To find out if he has completed reclamation after mining, we will evaluate his mining sites.
To save the party from the indictment of a man he called an ignorant conceited jerk, he challenged the NPP to remove Chairman Wontumi.
Several exposés describing the atrocities committed by illicit mining on Ghana's waterways and virgin forest reserves have included Chairman Wontumi's mining company, Akonta Mines.
The Nana Akufo Addo-Dr. Bawumia administration has been accused by environmental watchers of protecting him from being arrested and charged.
