According to recent estimates from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ghana has the greatest number of deportation cases in Africa under former President Donald Trump's new 2025 immigration policy. The report, titled "Trump Deportation List for 2025," details the ultimate removal cases for individuals from various nations, with Ghana leading the list in Africa.
According to the figures, 6,200 Ghanaians are scheduled to be deported from the United States, making Ghana the top-ranked African country on the list. Egypt follows Ghana, with 5,400 deportations. Other African nations on the list are Guinea, Senegal, and Angola, with 4,700, 3,800, and 1,800 cases, respectively.
The list includes countries from various areas, such as Romania (4,500 instances), Georgia (3,000 cases), Albania (2,300 cases), Tajikistan (1,500 cases), and Mauritania (1,200 cases).
The deportation strategy has been a prominent emphasis of Trump's agenda as he strives to tighten immigration rules during his electoral comeback. Critics claim that the program unfairly targets specific regions, mainly Africa and portions of Eastern Europe.
For Ghana, the large frequency of deportations raises worries about its residents' legal status in the United States and the difficulties they face in obtaining permanent residency. Many Ghanaians living in the United States have been reported to have overstayed their visas or failed to obtain the requisite papers to legally remain in the country.
The Ghanaian government has yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, experts predict that the increased number of deportations will have an impact on the expatriate population and limit remittances sent home.
As the U.S. prepares to implement these deportations, it remains to be seen how countries like Ghana will manage the reintegration of citizens returning home.
