Ghanaians have been reacting on social media when controversial social media pundit Albert Hype, also known as Bongo Ideas, delivered a startling birthday card to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Former President Akufo-Addo, who was born on March 29, 1944, will turn 81 today, March 29, 2025. His tenure as Ghana's 13th president, from 2017 to 2025, has been the topic of significant debate, eliciting both praise and condemnation throughout time.
As messages of kindness flooded in from politicians, celebrities, and ordinary residents alike, one statement stuck out and became the focus of online debates. Bongo Ideas went to social media to wish the former president well, but his statements struck many as thought-provoking.
His message read:
"Happy Birthday, Akufo-Addo. May God handle you according to how you have handled Ghana. May whatever Ghanaians endured during your tenure be your reward a hundredfold. May whatever you deserve come to you, and may you not escape the fruits of your deeds. Amen."
The post quickly went viral, garnering thousands of shares, comments, and reactions. While some Ghanaians applauded the message as an honest reflection of the country’s struggles under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, others found it too harsh, arguing that birthdays should be a time for goodwill and not criticism.
"Bongo Ideas never wastes an opportunity to make a statement! "This is the best birthday message Akufo-Addo could have received—straight to the point," one user said.
Another person objected, saying, "No matter what, let us respect our elders. This is unnecessary for someone's birthday."
Despite the various replies, Bongo Ideas maintained that he merely wanted fairness in how presidents are remembered and judged. "If he performed well, this prayer will be a blessing. "If not, then he will reap what he sowed," he tweeted in reaction to the criticism.
As Ghanaians ponder on Akufo-Addo's legacy, it is evident that his presidency had a long-lasting impact—one that will be debated for years to come. Whether Bongo Ideas' statement is viewed as a valid assessment or an unneeded insult, one thing is certain: it has generated a debate that will not go away anytime soon.
