Following his resolute decision to deny writs from the Supreme Court, Ghanaians across the country are expressing strong support for the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin. This is a huge political event. These writs, which were issued on October 28, 2024, attempted to overturn Speaker Bagbin's decision about the four parliamentary seat vacancies, a topic that has sparked intense national debate and controversy.

In a firm reply, Speaker Bagbin directed that the writs be sent back to the Supreme Court. He said that the court's intervention weakens Parliament's authority and violates the separation of powers principle. He believes that the Supreme Court has overreached itself and violated the independence and autonomy of the legislative branch. Bagbin argued that only Parliament has the power to declare seats empty and deal with matters pertaining to its membership, citing both the Ghanaian Constitution and parliamentary standing orders.

This audacious move comes in the midst of a heated political environment where the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is coming under increasing pressure over the open parliamentary seats. Many Ghanaians have found resonance in Speaker Bagbin's claim that the Supreme Court's intervention is politically motivated. This has raised fears that the judiciary may be unduly influenced by the executive branch, especially considering that President Akufo-Addo appointed many of the judges.

Support for Speaker Bagbin has surged on social media and various public forums, where citizens have commended him for defending Parliament's sovereignty. “Our democracy is safeguarded when leaders like the Speaker uphold the independence of institutions. Parliament should not be subdued by any other arm of government,” stated one citizen on a popular news platform. Another supporter remarked, “This is a rare show of courage; it’s heartening to see our Speaker standing up for the integrity of Parliament.”

The issue of the vacant seats has become a focal point in discussions about Ghana’s democratic checks and balances. For many citizens, Speaker Bagbin’s stance not only underscores parliamentary authority but also represents a broader call to preserve democratic norms. The developments surrounding this matter are expected to influence political discourse in the coming weeks, as both citizens and political figures monitor how Parliament and the judiciary navigate this critical juncture in Ghana’s political landscape.

For now, the support for Speaker Bagbin continues to grow, with many viewing his decision as a courageous affirmation of Parliament’s right to operate free from external interference—an essential component of the nation’s democratic foundation. As the situation unfolds, the implications for Ghana's governance and political stability remain a topic of keen interest.
