A former Member of Parliament (MP) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of harming the party's unity and electoral fortunes. In a recent statement, the ex-MP said that the president's leadership style and major policies have exacerbated tensions inside the party, hurting its chances in the 2024 general elections.
The former legislator identified increased factionalism, a lack of inclusion, and claimed bias in nominations as primary causes of anger among party members. He also questioned the government's handling of the economy, which has experienced serious issues such as high inflation and a weak currency, claiming that these have harmed the party's credibility with voters.
"The president's actions have alienated grassroots supporters and created mistrust among senior party officials," the former lawmaker stated. He asked the party's leadership to take immediate action to rebuild unity and reconnect with its supporters ahead of the elections.
This critique adds to a slew of internal issues raised by NPP members as the party prepares to nominate a flagbearer to replace President Akufo-Addo. Analysts warn that if these splits are not resolved quickly, the NPP's ability to maintain power in 2024 would suffer.
