Kwame Asare Obeng, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has sent an open letter to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama welcoming him on his return to the office. Obeng acknowledged Mahama's extensive political career, which included positions as Vice President, President, and Member of Parliament. Despite setbacks, including his past loss in the presidential contest, Obeng praised Mahama's tenacity and dedication in gaining a second chance to lead Ghana.
Obeng emphasised that great leadership transcends political success. He reminded Mahama that Ghana is a diverse country and encouraged him to focus on uniting the people rather than favouring specific political factions. Obeng used a dramatic metaphor, writing, "The river remembers every stone, but the ocean forgets every drop," imploring Mahama to mend tensions and promote the interests of all Ghanaians, not just those loyal to his party.
Obeng also warned against making hollow promises and using great rhetoric, emphasising the importance of making real progress. He warned that promises based on ambiguous language would eventually collapse, comparing such efforts to a frail bridge that would "crumble beneath the weight of footsteps." He expressed optimism that Mahama's period in opposition had taught him significant lessons, preparing him to lead with more wisdom and resilience.
In his final remarks, Obeng advised Mahama to focus on establishing a lasting legacy based on people's well-being. He emphasised that great leadership is defined by service to the nation and expressed optimism that Mahama's tenure would be recognised as a watershed moment in Ghana's history. Obeng's message emphasises the value of compassionate and successful leadership for Ghana's future.
