Former President John Dramani Mahama has given a strong warning to those seeking for seats in his next cabinet. Addressing the increased demand for appointments among party members and supporters, Mahama highlighted that only individuals willing to serve with humility, effort, and a commitment to the nation's progress will be considered.

Mahama's message for lobbyists
Speaking at a leadership event for National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives and stakeholders, Mahama advised lobbyists to consider why they want to run for public office. He reminded them that political appointments are not opportunities for personal gain or power, but rather for real service to the Ghanaian people.

"Leadership involves sacrifice, humility, and hard work. If you are not prepared to serve diligently and selflessly, do not volunteer. "Ghana needs leaders who prioritize the country's interests over personal ambitions," he said.

Growing Appointment Demand
As the NDC prepares to establish the next government, indications indicate that a rising number of party members are pressing for ministerial and other critical positions. While this is customary throughout transitions, Mahama's words demonstrate his intention to favor skill and honesty over mere loyalty.

Criteria for Appointments
Mahama outlined the qualities he expects from prospective appointees:

Humility: Leaders must engage respectfully with all Ghanaians, regardless of social status.
Diligence: Hard work and dedication to duty are non-negotiable.
Integrity: Appointees must uphold transparency and accountability in their roles.
Commitment: A genuine desire to advance Ghana’s development agenda is crucial.

He warned that those who fail to meet these standards risk being removed from office.

Public Reactions
Mahama’s firm stance has drawn praise from some quarters as a step toward fostering accountability in governance.

Political analyst Dr. Kojo Antwi noted:

“This is a positive signal. By prioritizing service over self-interest, Mahama is setting a tone for a government that works for the people.”
However, some party members have expressed concerns about favoritism and the potential exclusion of grassroots supporters who worked tirelessly for the NDC’s victory.
