Manasseh Azure Awuni, an award-winning Ghanaian investigative journalist, has shared a profound and often overlooked perspective on the family lives of public figures, using the case of Ghana's first female vice president, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, to highlight the struggles faced by their loved ones.
In a thought-provoking post shared on her social media accounts, Manasseh Azure Awuni revealed that, while many applaud her accomplishments and praise her as a trailblazer in Ghanaian politics, her family bears an emotional burden as a result of unwarranted political attacks. He detailed how vicious remarks and made-up articles about her appeared on social media, frequently criticizing her for her decision to join a political party.
"Imagine logging on to social media and seeing people, including your own students, insulting your mother for no reason apart from her decision to join a political party they oppose," Awuni told me. He remarked that women in politics are subjected to increased scrutiny, with attacks aimed to demonize and deter them from public service by those with opposing political views.
According to Manasseh Azure, this fact has prompted many families to urge their members against choosing political appointments or public service roles, so depriving Ghana of God-given skills. He emphasized the importance of Ghanaians holding public authorities accountable rather than resorting to personal assaults.
Manasseh Azure urged Ghanaians to support persons in the public spotlight and their families, ensuring that their accomplishments are celebrated without unjustified criticism and negativity.
