On Wednesday evening, there were reports of armed individuals robbing passengers of their possessions and attacking multiple cars. The incident happened in the Bono region along the Wenchi-Sunyani Highway.
The terrifying event included Cynthia Anima Boadu, the National Commission for Civic Education's (NCCE) Bono Regional Director. According to reports, Miss Boadu was going with William Arthur, a regional correspondent for UTV, and a few NCCE employees.
Around 8:20 p.m., the team was on its way back from a parliamentary discussion in the Banda constituency in preparation for the election on December 7. The team was traumatized by the incident, but they were unharmed. According to eyewitnesses, the seven thieves were carrying what seemed to be AK-47 guns when they fired warning rounds into the air, frightening the passengers.
The suspects stole phones, cash, and other valuables from the passengers during the more than 40-minute operation. In a separate event, on November 26, 2024, a gang ambushed Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, the National Democratic Party's (NDP) presidential candidate, and his group.
The Wenchi police station has received a complaint from the victims of the most recent heist, raising further worries about road safety in the area. In the Bono region, which has gained a reputation for armed robberies, police have not yet increased security measures to stop more incidents on the highways.
