The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has instructed its members stationed at collation centers across Ghana to evacuate their positions by Thursday, December 12, 2024.
This decision has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the reasoning behind such a huge shift.
Addressing the situation, an NDC spokeswoman stated, "The party is committed to guaranteeing the safety and well-being of all of its members. We cannot jeopardize their security in the face of rising tensions."
The spokesperson stated that the decision is intended to de-escalate any potential conflicts or disruption that may occur during the collation process.
This announcement comes as political tensions rise following the December 7 elections.
Reports of disagreements at various collation centers, combined with allegations of anomalies, have produced a tense environment.
In some regions, party operatives battled over the results, raising security concerns.
One member stationed at a collation center in the Ashanti Region stated, "It has not been easy remaining here with all of the pressure. We understand the decision, but it's difficult to leave while the process is still proceeding."
Political observers say the edict is a strategic measure by the NDC to avoid more allegations of involvement or disagreement. By asking its members to step away, the party may be portraying itself as a supporter of peace.
However, other opponents believe the move is a ploy to remove the party from any unpleasant outcomes.
"If they leave, how will they ensure fairness in the process? "They need to stay vigilant," one observer said.
