Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Special Aide to Ghana's President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has informed the people that the next administration will prioritize the recovery of the $58 million allegedly misappropriated from the disputed National Cathedral project. Her comments came during an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, where she highlighted the new government's commitment to accountability.
The National Cathedral project, started by the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, has experienced several delays and charges of financial malfeasance. Initially envisioned as a large Christian worship complex, the project has received widespread criticism for its rising expenses and lack of visible progress.
According to Ghanaweb, Mogtari raised concern about the $58 million that has already been spent, questioning the logic for such a significant spend with limited outcomes. "It is a history that we don't want to remember too often," she told me. "We need to understand where the money went, who received it, and how it was used."
Mogtari emphasized the importance of transparency, promising that the new government will undertake a thorough audit to reveal the full scope of any financial irregularities related with the project. "There are many possibilities for that piece of land," she told me, "and our focus will be on recovering those funds and using them more effectively."
The ongoing debate surrounding the National Cathedral has raised questions about fiscal accountability, particularly considering Ghana's current economic woes. Critics claim that prioritizing the cathedral in the face of these challenges calls into question the management of public resources.
