According to a report released on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, President-elect John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the significant obstacles that his incoming administration would face, with an emphasis on the nation's economic difficulties and public expectations.

Mahama emphasized the challenge of bringing stability to Ghana's economy and winning back the public's trust at a meeting with Charles Abani, the UN Resident Coordinator, on Tuesday, December 10.

Mahama acknowledged the seriousness of the situation by saying, "I don't fool myself that it is going to be an easy task; it is going to be quite tough."

"I expected that we were going to win, but I didn't expect the margin by which we were going to win," he said, pointing to the substantial mandate he earned in the election. That suggests that Ghanaians hold themselves to extremely high standards.

The president-elect emphasized that addressing the country's debt issue, maintaining food security in the face of climate-related challenges, and keeping his campaign pledges within reasonable bounds will be the top priority of his administration going forward.

Recognizing the complexity of the current financial position, Mahama said, "We need to look at what the reality is in terms of sitting together and seeing what the way forward is."

"One of our main concerns is the issue of the debt repayments," he added, underscoring the pressing need to resolve Ghana's debt. In order to avoid defaulting again, which would be far more disastrous than the current circumstance, we must figure out how to smooth things out.

Mr. Mahama also acknowledged the value of international collaboration in addressing Ghana's economic problems and conveyed hope for collaborating with international organizations to aid in the nation's recovery.
