Adomonline reported on Wednesday that Accra police had detained a man who paid GHS 5,000 for a phone that costs GHS 70,000.
According to reports, the suspect who sold the phone is thought to have been involved in the local murder of a 78-year-old woman.
The unidentified 78-year-old woman was discovered dead at her home under suspicious circumstances, according to police reports.
Since the phone was thought to have belonged to the elderly woman before to her passing, investigators were able to immediately connect the phone transaction to the case.
"The suspect, who we believe sold the phone, was arrested after an investigation revealed that the phone had been sold at a fraction of its real value," according to a police official. "We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman's death."
After being questioned by officials, the individual who purchased the phone—who had no idea where it came from—was taken into custody. He thoroughly cooperated with their inquiry, according to the police. As he told the authorities, "I had no idea about the murder," the man. "I simply bought the phone from someone I thought was selling it at a reasonable price."
Now, investigators are attempting to piece together what happened before the woman died. They think the perpetrator might have taken the victim's phone before murdering her.
"We are not ruling out the possibility of the phone being a key piece of evidence in this case," the police official went on to say. Many people in Accra are startled by this tragedy, particularly those who resided in the calm suburb where the elderly widow lived. Locals have voiced their shock, saying that such sad incidents are rare in their community.
"Accra is usually a peaceful place, but this incident is truly heartbreaking," a neighbor commented. "The woman was a nice person, and we all knew her. It's hard to comprehend why something like this might occur. The public has been reassured by the police that every effort is being made to resolve the case and provide the victim with justice. They have urged anyone with knowledge to come forward while the investigation goes on.
The police spokesperson said, "We are committed to ensuring that justice is served, and we urge anyone who knows anything about this incident to speak up." The case is still being investigated, and additional information is anticipated to surface in the days ahead.
