Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's recent journey to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, has sparked reactions on social media in Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Friday, he said that the purpose of this trip is to thank Allah for His bounty while also seeking protection and direction for Ghana's future.

The Vice President traveled with his wife, Samira Bawumia, and a few famous personalities. These include Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, a former Minister of Finance; Mustapha Ussif, a former Minister of Youth and Sports; and Habib Iddrisu, a Member of Parliament for Tolon.

The pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, is an essential practice for Muslims worldwide. It is viewed as a manner of demonstrating faith and loyalty to Allah. This act of worship is important in the Islamic faith, and many individuals perform it as a spiritual obligation.

His decision to make the pilgrimage is considered as both a personal and spiritual act, as well as a means of seeking divine assistance for his political journey.

Here are some reactions of Ghanaians:

"I landed in Mecca yesterday with Hajia Samira Bawumia and some friends to conduct Umrah (the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca). This is to praise the Almighty Allah for His mercy. We also prayed for direction and safety for ourselves and our country, Ghana," he wrote on his Facebook page.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the current head of the New Patriotic Party. He led the party to the 2024 elections, but lost to the NDC's nominee, John Mahama. Many anticipate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will head the NPP again in the 2028 elections.
