The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended 184 members from the Yendi constituency, claiming violations of the party constitution.
The decision, which takes effect on December 26, 2024, was unanimously approved at an extended Constituency Executive Committee meeting held on December 23, 2024.
The conference was attended by Constituency Executives, the Council of Elders, the Council of Patrons, and the party's Disciplinary Committee.
Alhaji Baba Gazali, Chairman of the National People's Party in Yendi, informed the party's national and regional leadership, as well as the general public, of the suspension. The leadership received multiple complaints from party members against the suspended persons, which were extensively investigated, resulting in negative conclusions.
The complaints against the suspended members included running as independent candidates against the party's officially elected parliamentary candidate, joining or declaring support for another political party, supporting an independent candidate in the December 7, 2024, election in the Yendi constituency, and party officials refusing to work for the party in the recently concluded presidential and parliamentary elections.
The leadership cited pertinent rules from the party's constitution, which say that members who run as independent candidates or support other political parties automatically lose their membership.
Members may also be suspended pending a Disciplinary Committee investigation into their conduct, and those found to be in violation of party rules may be expelled.
The NPP underlined the necessity of adhering to the party's constitution and remaining united as it navigates the challenges brought by the recent elections.
