According to GHOne TV, residents of Jasikan, a town in the Oti Region, were shocked on Saturday, January 25th, when police discovered a big sum of money, totaling GHS 34,589 million, buried in a hole inside the home of local businessman Mr. Kofi Asante.
The finding came after officials received a tip from concerned homeowners who had spotted suspicious activity outside Mr. Asante's home. Early this morning, police officers came on the spot to investigate the claims, and while investigating the property, they discovered a hole skillfully disguised beneath furniture and carpet in one of the rooms.
"It took us a while to locate the exact spot because it was well hidden," stated one of the cops engaged in the operation. "But once we found it, we were stunned to discover bundles of cash carefully packed in bags."
Mr. Asante, a well-known local dealer, was unable to provide an adequate explanation for the significant sum of money. When questioned by authorities, he claimed the money was the result of his years of hard work in business, but he was unable to offer any documentation or evidence to back up his claims.
Residents crowded around the house in shock, unable to believe the significance of the find. "How could somebody hide such a large sum of money like this? "What kind of business does he do to make so much money?" said Ama Mensah, a concerned neighbor.
Following the discovery, the police seized the money, and investigations are currently underway. Authorities believe the monies may be linked to illicit activity such as tax evasion or money laundering.
"This is a serious matter, and we are committed to getting to the bottom of it," said Superintendent Kwame Adjei, Oti Region Police Commander. "We urge the public to come forward with any information that could assist in our investigation."
Mr. Asante is currently in police custody while detectives investigate his claims and the source of the money.
The incident has attracted great interest in the community, with many asking how such a large cash could have gone undetected for so long.
