Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

The Minister of Education's announcement that the Commission will publish the 2024 West Africa Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results on Sunday, December 29, 2024, has been deemed scandalous by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

John Kapi, WAEC's Director of Public Affairs, asserts that as WAEC has not made any engagement or statement to that effect, Dr. Adutwum's claim cannot be factually accurate.

"Let me explain what happened this morning. When the minister arrived, he was escorted around by the head of office and showed the broken-down equipment, which are still operational but not at full capacity due to incomplete repairs. They showed him the stack of objective answer cards to be scanned, and then he walked out. There was no official meeting like, 'Okay, let's sit down and discuss the next steps, what should we do? When will they be able to fix the machines? Nothing of that sort occurred. Then he walked out and told the journalists that the findings would be released no later than December 28th or 29th. However, WAEC has not made a statement to that effect, thus this is factually untrue," he told Starr FM in an interview.

He criticized the minister's actions and urged for a collaborative effort to resolve the issues that have caused the delay in the distribution of the results.

"This is scandalous because why are we messing with people's futures? I didn't want to go into that, but I can tell you that we also have colleagues whose children took the exam, and we're all waiting for this to be resolved so that the results can be released to everyone. We are Ghanaians, and we have wards that are also candidates, so if this is happening, it is impacting us as well as some third party someplace, and I believe we should all get involved, speak the truth to the world, and then find a solution once and for all," he stated.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, promised the public on Monday that the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results will be revealed within the next week.

Dr. Adutwum, who spoke to media during a working visit to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), stated that the examination institution was working during the celebrations to have the results ready by December 29, 2024.

His comments follow WAEC's announcement that it would be unable to process this year's WASSCE results due to funding limits and logistical issues.

The government is alleged to owe the examination board almost GH¢100 million in indebtedness, which has impeded its capacity to distribute the results of over 460,000 students nationally.

Speaking to the media on Monday, the Minister expressed confidence that the results would be disclosed before the end of the year.

"I came to update myself on developments, such as the fact that they are currently working through the holidays to get the results out by the 29th of this month. So I came in and saw the workers; scanning was underway, with nearly half completed. They guarantee me that by the end of the day, 50% of the scanning will be finished. The results will be released on or around the 29th of this month, according to the Education Minister.

In an interview with the media, the minister expressed confidence that the several millions of dollars outstanding to WAEC would not prevent the release by the end of the month.

When asked if the government will make further payments to WAEC, the minister responded, "Excuse me, you don't have the facts."

He made it clear that his visit to the premises was not to address the debt situation, but rather to make a routine visit to the examination body, as he always does.
