According to TV3 GH, in Kumasi, two suspected thieves were stoned by members of the public after reportedly stealing a lady's handbag carrying GHC 4,500.
The incident occurred on a busy thoroughfare in the city, and the two guys allegedly targeted the woman in plain daylight.
According to eyewitnesses, the lady was strolling along the street when the criminals abruptly approached her and grabbed her handbag, which held a large sum of money.
The two males promptly took the bag, which contained GHC 4500, and attempted to depart the area.
But their escape was short-lived. Members of the public who had witnessed the crime immediately pursued the robbers.
Within moments, the crowd had caught up with them and began pelting the suspects with stones in an act of fast retribution.
The scene immediately became chaotic as more people joined in, and the two criminals were overpowered by the public's rage and revenge.
One eyewitness stated, "I saw them take the bag from the lady. It happened so quickly. However, the folks in the region reacted quickly.
They chased and caught them. It wasn't long before they began stoning them. Another witness added:
"Everyone was quite outraged. They couldn't believe anybody would do that to a woman in broad daylight. We all wanted to ensure they learned their lesson."
The two bandits were eventually rescued by police, who arrived on the scene shortly after the stoning started.
They were brought into custody for questioning, while the lady, who was understandably startled, was relieved to get her purse returned, but the money had not yet been totally recovered.
Local officials have denounced the act of public justice, stressing that while it is critical to report wrongdoing, taking matters into one's own hands can be harmful.
A representative for the force stated, "We understand the public's frustration, but we always encourage citizens to report crimes to the police instead of taking the law into their own hands."
