The Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that 156 Ghanaians are about to be deported from the United States.
Taking his time before Parliament's Appointments Committee today, he confirmed claims that President Donald Trump planned to deport 6,200 people from the United States.
He also stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with US authorities to protect the rights and dignity of the affected Ghanaians.
According to certain reports, the mass deportation by the United States will impact roughly 6,200 Ghanaians. However, according to the brief I received from Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, they allay concerns that the numbers are not that high and that, as of right now, the ministry has received official notification from Washington, DC, that there are 156 people, not 6,200, who are in danger of deportation," he said.
Over 3,500 undocumented immigrants have been detained nationwide by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Trump's inauguration on January 20.
Additionally, the Trump administration has started deportation flights, which use American military planes to return migrants to their home countries.
