Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in Ghana, the Mamponghene, the supreme leader of the Mampong traditional region in the Ashanti Region, has issued a severe ultimatum to the National Democratic Congress. The chief has requested that the party retract any utterances deemed disrespectful to the Ashanti people, giving them less than 24 hours to comply.

On Sunday, April 13, 2025, Mamponghene addressed the constituency's NDC leadership at his palace, condemning the actions of party supporters who have waged an open campaign against the possible nomination of an Ashanti for the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position.

"Advise those in the NDC who perpetrated the terrible deed. They have until tomorrow afternoon. If not, we'll shake things up so they know we have the power and the full jurisdiction," Daasebre Osei Bonsu raged.

He praised Ashantis for their tolerance and openness to diversity, adding that Ashanti is still the only territory in Ghana where other tribes can install their own chiefs.

"Because of my position at the institution, I have traveled much. There is no place you mentioned that I am not aware of. But our place is the only spot where you may locate Sarkin Zongo, Ewe Chiefs, and so forth. You're all Mampong people. "We respect and treat everyone equally, so why are some people attempting to cause division among us?" he asked.

Mamponghene's reaction follows the acts of certain NDC youth who have been lobbying against President John Dramani Mahama's prospective nomination of an Ashanti for the area's MCE seat.

Last week, NDC youth in the Asante Mampong Constituency opposed the alleged nomination of Esther Dwomoh as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). On April 9 and 10, the youth, who supported three shortlisted candidates—Yakubu Issifu (2024 Parliamentary Candidate), Mohammed Kamil (Constituency Chairman), and Imoro Iddrisu—stormed the party headquarters, vandalizing property and setting goods on fire.

They contended that the shortlisted trio, all long-time party stalwarts, merited the position over Dwomoh, a new NDC member since 2022.

The group's demand was clear: "no Ashanti will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong," a declaration that has been widely denounced as anti-Ashanti and insulting to the proprietors of Mampong property.

Meanwhile, the NDC constituency leadership has apologized, condemned the violence, and encouraged calm as they await President Mahama's final decision.
