Who Will Become the Next Speaker of Parliament? Three Potential Names Revealed

The contest for Ghana's next Speaker of Parliament is gaining traction as the 9th Parliament convenes on January 7, 2025. With the dissolution of the 8th Parliament, a new Speaker and two Deputy Speakers will be elected during the first sitting, which begins at 12:05 a.m.

Ebenezer Azumah Djietro, Clerk to Parliament, made the announcement, highlighting the significance of a smooth transition for the new administration led by President-elect John Mahama. This procedure will ensure that all Members of Parliament take their oaths of office and commence their duties promptly.

Three prospective candidates have surfaced for the office of Speaker of Parliament in the Ninth Parliament.

1. Alban Bagbin - Alban Bagbin, the current Speaker of Parliament, is generally regarded for his leadership during the past four years. Alban Bagbin is likely to compete for the role again. He is also considered the favorite to win.

2. Kwame Asare Obeng (A+) Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A Plus, has been considered as a candidate for the job of Second Deputy Speaker. A Plus is recognized for his activism and strong opinions on governance and corruption. While he is new to legislative leadership, his popularity among young people and support for transparency could make him a viable candidate. According to a report from GhanaWeb.

3. Dr. Benjamin Kunbour - Dr. Kunbour, a former Attorney General, is another prominent candidate in the contest. His legal expertise and government experience qualify him for the Speaker role. Many see him as someone who can bring professionalism and legal knowledge to the position.

The Speaker's responsibility is to preside over parliamentary proceedings while simultaneously ensuring fairness, order, and conformity to the constitution.
