The tale claims that a police officer in Tesano, Accra, narrowly avoided being lynched by a bunch of suspected wee smokers near Peace FM because his fellow officers from the Formed Police Unit (FPU) acted quickly to stop them.

Both authorities and locals are shocked by the Tuesday afternoon tragedy.

An FPU member, Corporal Dominic Adiali, had gone to a local tailor to get a uniform sewn. He chose to wait since the tailor was not there when he arrived at the store.

A number of young men gathered around and started smoking what looked like Indian hemp while they waited.

Realizing the illegality of their actions, Corporal Adiali confronted them. “Gentlemen, this is not the place for such acts. You’re better than this. Stop it and leave,” he advised.

But what he said angered the group. "Who are you to tell us what to do here?" shot out one of the men, who was clearly upset. We'll show you who we are if you stay! One person grabbed a broken bottle and lunged toward the officer as tensions swiftly increased.



Corporal Adiali's friend attempted to defuse the situation but was also threatened. Corporal Adiali made the decision to head back toward the barracks after realizing the increasing threat. Armed with knives, stones, and other weapons, the mob of men pursued him as he left. One of them threw a stone at him and said, "Run all you want; we'll catch you!" In spite of the potentially fatal circumstances, Corporal Adiali was able to evade his assailants and get to a secure area, where he promptly requested assistance.



The FPU team arrived promptly and dispersed the group before any further harm could be done. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

"This conduct is intolerable," said one of the responding officers. "Some people believe they can enforce the law on their own, but we are here to maintain peace and security. Let this serve as a reminder that such behavior will not be accepted. Since then, Corporal Adiali has praised his comrades for their prompt action, stating, "I don't know what could have happened to me without their timely intervention." The incident is still being investigated.
