The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO) have issued a warning to Ghanaians to prepare for potential power outages, often known as "dumsor."
The warning comes as a result of a huge increase in debts owing to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), putting the country's power supply at jeopardy.
ECG and GRIDCO indicated that increasing indebtedness to IPPs have made it difficult to maintain a consistent flow of power across the country.
The two organizations noted that IPPs, which generate a significant part of the country's electricity, have been having difficulty receiving payment for the power they supply.
As a result, if the debts are not paid in a timely manner, some of these power companies may be obliged to reduce or cease power generation.
In their statement, ECG and GRIDCO highlighted the urgent need for the government to intervene and settle the outstanding arrears to avoid further power outages.
"If this issue is not resolved soon, we may experience more frequent power outages, which will affect businesses, households, and other essential services," the spokesperson said.
Ghanaians have been cautioned to prepare for the prospect of power outages, particularly as the country approaches the dry season, which is normally associated with increased electrical use.
Citizens are concerned about the situation, as previous power outages have had a significant impact on daily living.
The government, through the Ministry of Energy, has vowed to handle the matter, but it is unclear when a resolution would be reached.
Meanwhile, Ghanaians are being asked to use electricity carefully to reduce the load on the national infrastructure.
