Akaneweo Kabiru Abdul, a pan-Africanist and civil society champion, has openly criticized former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama's introduction of a $600,000 luxury automobile.
According to Abdul, this behavior exemplifies carelessness and insensitivity, particularly given the country's current economic woes.
In a Facebook post dated January 13, 2025, Abdul expressed his displeasure with the previous president's decision to display a fully customized, fireproof, amphibious car powered by a V16 turbo engine.
He criticized the action as detached from the reality of ordinary Ghanaians, who face challenges such as power outages, gasoline shortages, and rising unemployment.
"The unveiling of this extravagant vehicle shows a lack of care for the people," Abdul stated in an email.
"Ghanaians are enduring so much pain, yet leaders choose to spend resources on luxury instead of solving pressing issues."
Abdul stated that Ghana currently has enough state vehicles to support the activities of public authorities.
He questioned why such a large sum of money was spent on a single vehicle when the cash could have been used to address crucial national issues.
For example, he referred to the chronic food shortages in senior high schools around the country.
According to Abdul, the $600,000 might have been utilized to address the food shortages, allowing students to focus on their studies.
He also reminded the public of previous instances of wasteful spending by politicians, which resulted in the fall of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from office.
"This kind of leadership is why Ghanaians voted the NPP out," Abdul is quoted as saying.
The advocate's comments spurred a broader discussion regarding African governments' objectives and commitment to addressing their populations' challenges.
Many Ghanaians have expressed similar thoughts, blasting the seeming disdain for the people's economic challenges.
Abdul's post contained a screenshot of Mahama's 2011 comment, which fueled the debate around political accountability and sensitivity during difficult times.
